Our experienced team help you create a well-ventilated environment, ensuring your building complies with Part F of the UK Building Regulations.

Well-considered ventilation systems are essential for providing indoor air flow and sufficient ventilation to ensure removal of moisture in the air, generated by kitchens, bathrooms and other wet rooms. If your property should require additional ventilation systems, advice is provided to help you choose the most cost-effective approach while adhering to Part F.

Why is Part F Ventilation Important?

With years of expertise in regulatory compliance, our tailored ventilation services ensure your building meets the necessary requirements. Our team help you select ventilation systems that meet your project needs, ensuring compliance at every stage and providing detailed reports for Building Control.

If you’re building a new residential property, extension, or conversion, you’ll need to complete a Part F assessment to ensure your building complies with ventilation requirements. This assessment involves calculating the air change rates based on the size and occupancy of the building.

What Does Part F Ventilation Involve?

Our experienced team work with you to carefully plan ventilation to meet the requirements of building regulations Part F, whether that be carrying out background ventilation (trickle vent) calculations or advising on the minimum air flow rates required for local extractors. Our on-site team have the capabilities to test the requirements and provide reports to ensure compliance with Part F Ventilation.

How Energy Report Can Help

At Energy Report, we simplify Part F compliance by offering As-Built Ventilation Testing:

Design Stage Ventilation Calculations

Guidance in the early design stage on achieving a well-ventilated building, including advice on systems that meet the required standards. This ensures compliance with Building Regulation requirements before construction begins.

As-Built Ventilation Testing

Once completed, our team will carry out air flow tests to ensure all extractors and ventilation systems meet the requirements of Approved Document Part F. We provide a Part F compliance report for submission to Building Control.

FAQs

What is Part F testing?

Part F testing measures the airflow performance of mechanical extract fans to confirm they provide adequate ventilation. It ensures new dwellings meet the minimum ventilation rates required by Building Regulations Part F (Ventilation).

Why is Part F Testing needed?

Ventilation testing is a mandatory requirement under Part F. It helps safeguard indoor air quality, preventing damp, mould, and pollutants from building up — essential for occupant health and building longevity.

What does the test involve?

Each extract fan is tested using a calibrated flow hood or anemometer to measure the air volume extracted at the grille or terminal. The results are compared against the minimum flow rates set out in Part F.

What are the minimum airflow rates?

This depends on the room type and ventilation strategy:

  • Kitchen: typically 13 L/s (adjacent) or 30 L/s (direct to outside)
  • Bathroom: typically 8 L/s
  • Utility rooms and WCs: typically 6 L/s

Your tester will confirm the exact rates relevant to your design and ventilation system type.

Full details can be found here

How long does the test take?

A standard dwelling usually takes 15–30 minutes to test, depending on the number of extract fans and accessibility.

What happens if a fan fails?

If airflow rates are below the required level, the issue is often due to duct blockages, poor installation, or incorrect fan specification. Once rectified, we’ll retest and issue a revised result to confirm compliance.

Do you provide a certificate?

Yes. A Part F Ventilation Test Certificate is issued for submission to Building Control as proof of compliance.

Can Part F testing be combined with other services?

Absolutely. It’s often completed alongside air-tightness testing, SAP or SBEM compliance, and Part L assessments — offering cost and scheduling efficiencies through a single visit.
